The young woman in this photo is Dorothy Counts. She was only 15-years old at the time of this picture, but at that early age she was making history. Douglas Martin caught this iconic image on film back in 1956. Counts was one of only 4 African American students enrolled in what had been all-white schools. This image depicts Counts walking to Harry Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the background, white students can be seen leering and mocking Counts as she makes her way to school. The students were encouraged to spit on her and throw rocks.
Counts lasted 4-days at the school, but then her parents removed her from the facility due to the constant and escalating harassment she continued to suffer.
