This photo from World War I shows a soldier who is suffering from “shell shock.” Nowadays he might be diagnosed with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) or war “neurosis.” He may be smiling, but there is nothing “happy” about this image. His eyes are shining in an abnormal way due to the atrocities he saw while fighting in the war. The experience made him lose touch with reality. Sadly, because not much was known about this condition, many men were executed for “abandoning” their posts.
Doctors recognized “shell shock,” but felt it was due from a poor moral character, rather than the effects of war on a person’s psyche.
